Why I’m Taking the PRG Patent Bar Review Course

The CIA didn’t want me as a secret agent.  The FBI didn’t want me as a special agent.  Patent Resources Group is going to assist me in recovering from these disappointments by helping me become a Patent Agent.  Actually, my path towards taking (and hopefully passing) the Patent Agent’s Registration Examination is a little bit more logical than that.

I graduated college with a Bachelor’s degree in Physics, and decided I didn’t have the motivation to go to and be successful in graduate school at that time.  With only a Bachelor’s in physics, however, my employment options were somewhat limited.  Eventually, I was offered a position as a Patent Classifier…2,000 miles away from where I went to college.  I had little idea what a Patent Classifier was or how I might grow professionally from there.  So I accepted, thus taking the first step toward becoming a Registered Patent Agent.

Being introduced to the field of Patents through classification was a good way to start because it allowed me to read a large number of patents and patent applications, which is almost like learning a new language.  It also allowed me to see how different classes in the United States Patent Classification system are related, and thus to see ways the technologies they contain are related.  Compared to other processes relating to patent prosecution, classification is a relatively straightforward process, so I was able to master the process fairly quickly and begin learning about a variety of technologies, rather than being pigeonholed in a very specific field as new examiners are.

The ability to read and (more importantly) understand patent documents and the broad understanding of various technologies obtained through a physics education and classification work significantly smoothed the transition into becoming a Patent Analyst.  Through my work as a patent analyst, I have learned a great deal about the way patent prosecution works and how attorneys and inventors try to get things patented, while examiners try to ensure that what is patented is worthy by combing existing prior art looking for known examples of what the prospective inventor has claimed.  While I still have much to learn about USPTO practice, I am ready to continue my patent prosecution education by concurrently preparing for the Patent Bar.  PRG provides the best preparation for prospective patent lawyers and agents through their recently updated Patent Bar Review Course, and I am going to prove it.

By chronicling my preparation for the examination, with the incomparable assistance of PRG’s course, I hope to show how valuable this type of training can be.  Becoming a Patent Agent is a big step for me, professionally, and I know it’s not something that can be taken lightly, by me or anyone out there considering the Patent Bar Review Course.  Therefore, I hope to show that with hard work and the guidance of PRG, with their mountains of experience and knowledge regarding every aspect of Intellectual Property, the Patent Bar is an attainable goal for anyone.
